Welcome to episode 43 of The Circle of Confusion, the professional photography podcast.
No news this week apart from the bombshell.
At long last, we discuss the question “Is Photography Art?” We talk at length about this with Peter and myself on one side and Roger on the other. Blood will be spilled !
And now for the bombshell.
This will be last Circle of Confusion Podcast.
Roger, Peter, and myself Neil would like to thank everyone who has listened, downloaded and left comments on the podcast. We also like to thank those who purchased the videos.
We hope we made you smile and added a bit of knowledge along the way.
Why are we doing this?
Listen to the podcast to find out as it will take to long for me to type

That ending, imo, was high ART!!
Anyway, after giving us last week the answer to life, the universe and everything… what else could you do? Bowing out is just the only decent thing left.
THANKS guys for all the entertaining and interesting thoughts and ramblings. And best of luck!
PS: I do too blame Fiacra for leaving you guys, he was the glue that was holding you together, without him you are nothing!
PS2: Do feel a bit sad …
Thanks Javier for being there from the start.
Ah, and maybe see you (g+) hanging(out) around! …
What a shame that my weekly rush is over. It is not until you lose something that you realise how valuable it is to you.
Regarding your discussion on what is art, my impression of this subject was never to confuse between the lines. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder but when all is said and done a great photograph is always great photograph.
Kind regards
Patrick Mullan
Sure thing Javier. Don’t forget twitter, blog and website. Also you can always email me any time
Thanks Patrick for all your comments over the past few months. We are glad you enjoyed the podcast but we hope you understand our decision to stop. It was a hard call to make on our side but…
Ah Don’t go, yez are great fun!!
Sorry to hear the podcast is ending. It must have been a huge demand on your time. Thank you so much for putting in the effort and having so many thought provoking topics. Well done
But sure and have yez no Gaeilge at all?? Last week, when you were talking about the Olympus OMD and how fast it is, you related it to OMG but it is OMG – “Oh Mo Dhia”
Best wishes for all you future endeavours
Ray
Thanks Ray for your comments and listening to our weekly injection of fun !
Keep the faith.
I liked the sign off music that was the best part, the rest of it was a load of old cobblers! – as I can’t say rude words on the Internet in fear Peter will track me down!
(seriously you guys put on a great show, sad to see it go! – Well done)
Thanks Gavin for your comment I think !
I’d like to pitch in here and say thank to everyone for their kind comments. Ending “Confusion” was a tough decision to make. Certainly it leaves us saddened, but we’re proud of the show and grateful to everyone who listened and to everyone who engaged with us.
So Long Farewell Goodbye
Big Bad Voodoo Daddy sings a song by that title the words and energy of which could accompany your last episode – http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=56pNZycAzqg
I should have realized (realised for the European folks) something was happening when Peter started saying “Thanks for all the fish”. It was evocative of a song sung by some dolphin friends of mine:
“So sad that it should come to this / We tried to warn you all, but, oh, dear / You may not share out intellect / Which might explain your disrespect / For all the natural wonders that grow around you / So long, so long, and thanks for all the fish! The world’s about to be destroyed…”
I’ve enjoyed your podcasts because they were real. Not produced by the minions of high-flying celebrities. It was as though I were dropping into my local pub for a weekly get together with some friends who were also expert photographers. Good conversation and good times.
I wish you all happiness and great success in your careers and lives.
Without having your podcast to offer guidance, I’ll have to keep saying that “I always thought something was fundamentally wrong with the universe”.
Remember, the answer is 42
Thank you all for keeping me informed and entertained both in sound and vision.
You really had something going there it a shame that not enough people found it.
Thanks for all your hard work
No thank you Kevin for your time to listen and watch The Circle of Confusion and Dynamic Range.
Regards Neil
Thank you Rich for all your comments and this one was a fitting end to them all. Your right it was like listening in on three old fellows sitting at the bar talking Sh….
Keep the faith.
Regards Neil
My Thursdays will never be the same again. Suppose I wont get them funny looks at work anymore when I snigger at the ‘funny bits’. Haha…! In fairness I can completely understand the reasoning behind the finishing. I’ll have to make do with Rogers efforts instead. Hehe.
In all seriousness well done on getting this far. Great achievement. Best of luck in your future endeavours…!
Richie
(hmmmmm….. maybe there’s now room for someone else to take the Irish Photography podcast ropes…?????)
Thanks Richie. Our Tuesdays and Wednrsdays will never be the same again. I hope someone will follow in our foot steps ………….
You guys are the TOPGEAR of photography and it’s already been said above, but the podcast will be missed. Roger, you should have nailed Peter to the cross on the art debate, you let him get off
. And yet, Peter and Neil, I happen to think you do indeed paint wonderfully with light. Like others I’m sure, having discovered you through the podcast, we’ll be able to follow you individually. Roger, looking forward to hearing more ‘Documentary Photographer’ podcasts from you. Best of luck to you all in your future pursuits. Kind regards, Mark.
Thanks Mark for all your comments. As you said we’re still here on the Internet thingy.
Regards Neil
Gentlemen (and i use the term loosely)
First of all thanks for the mention on your podcast and for the years of listening pleasure that I’ve derived from your ramblings
)
Dunno if I’ve actually learned anything but I’ve certainly enjoyed every audio minute of them.
I’m really looking forward to being able to “hang out” on G+ in the (hopefully) not too distant future with you all.
All the best.
Rgds
Tom Waugh
Thanks Tom, we have being called worse. We would be worried if you did learn something for us
Regards Neil
Hi guys,
To say I’m sad to hear the show is ending is an understatement. I have enjoyed every one of them, amused and informed in equal measure.
While I understand the decision I selfishly hope the show rises like a phoenix once more. You should be very proud of what you’ve done, I for one am very grateful.
Best wishes to you all,
Tom Kavanagh
I have to say I was a latecomer to this show, I only found it a few weeks ago, and determinedly listened to every episode starting from 1.. I only discovered it ended this morning when I finally “caught up.” While I completely understand your reasoning for putting an end to it, I was crushed at the same time, having thoroughly enjoyed the relationship between you all and the lack of “sanitized” news, that so many other podcasts suffer from. It was refreshing to hear canon and nikon get their knuckles slapped and a general lack of “fanboyism” not to mention a great sense of humour over all.
Frankly, I’d happily listen to you guys if you just got together and talked shite about the state of photography and gear once in a while with no supporting documents at all, just have a good go at it and push it out on the stream raw.
Thanks, belatedly, for all the great podcasts,
A Canadian Kilpatrick
Thanks Tom for your support over the past year.
See you around the internet.
Regards Neil
Thanks Sean for your comment. I know it’s ended but your word still mean a lot to us.
Regards Neil
I’m going to miss the podcast. And now I don’t know what to do with the piggybank where I’d been saving my pennies for Dynamic Range Episode 3. Best of luck to all of you.
Thanks Bill, you just reminded me of a ad about a little girl and her piggybank and the quote “die piggybank die”.
I’m sure you will find some user for your stash of cash.
Regards Neil
I was greatly saddened to hear that you are stopping. This was the only photo podcast I could listen to. Whereas you were fun to listen to, that was not why I liked you so much; I feel that you were a source of intelligent discussion. This talk about art is a great example. Too many others would have just glossed over the topic.
I understand your business decision, but, it is unfortunate that is come to that. I suppose making the podcast commercial would not have helped.
You will be missed.
Thanks Tim for your kind words. Making it commercial is interesting but it may have taken away the “fun” aspect.
Something to think about…………..
hey guys? are you ok? you are running a bit late with this week’s podcast… hope all is alright … just a little bit worried
Hi Guys,
A little late, but I’ve just listened to your last podcast and learnt, with great sadness, of your decision to finish the broadcasts. Knowing the pulls on one’s time that come from daily life, I would never dream of trying to persuade you otherwise, but I would like you to know that you will be missed. As a listener to the podcast and a viewer of all your videos, I can honestly say that you feel like three close friends who will be greatly missed. I have so enjoyed your funny, informal, yet highly pertinent discussions and I have learnt a lot from your videos. So a big “thank you” to all three of you and all the very best for your futures. I’ll be keeping an eye and ear out for any news.
All the best.
Thanks Simon, and it’s never too late.
And Thank you for your support on the podcast and videos.
WHAT? The end? But I was just getting started. Bloody drat. Is that even a proper phrase? Whatever, who cares, you’ll not be casting again…
I did enjoy the conversation about art. You’re still wrong Peter…
